Binu Cherian serves as the Senior Country Manager for HarvestPlus in India, a global program of the Consultative Group for International Agriculture and Research (CGIAR), based in International Food Policy Research Institute ( IFPRI). HarvestPlus focuses on the development and deployment of biofortified food staple crops across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. HarvestPlus is dedicated to enhancing nutrition and public health by creating and advocating for biofortified food crops enriched with essential vitamins and minerals. With a mission to provide global leadership in biofortification evidence and technology, HarvestPlus impacts over 100 million people worldwide with over 420 varieties of biofortified crop varieties available for cultivation in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Binu provides strategic leadership to facilitate the effective introduction, distribution, and acceptance of biofortified crops within India, aiming to achieve tangible health outcomes. He oversees cross-disciplinary leadership to integrate research, product development of biofortified staple food crops, and commercialization through public-private partnerships, establishing market linkages, and the formulation of marketing strategies. He actively engages in raising awareness and promoting biofortification within India and the broader region, particularly within the realms of agriculture and nutrition. Binu Cherian has successfully established partnership platforms with both public and private institutions to scale the adoption of biofortified crops. Before his tenure at HarvestPlus, Binu Cherian has over 20 years of experience in the private sector. His expertise includes agriculture supply chain, climate-smart agriculture practices, and establishing rural value chains for improving the livelihood of smallholder farmers.
