Take a dive into what Nutrition from Water (NXW) has been up to since being a featured start-up at the Asia-Pacific Agri-Food Innovation Summit in 2024. 

NXW, a nutrition technology company based out of Portugal and New Zealand, is a ground-breaking innovator who partners with global food corporations, striving to deliver complete, future-proof nutrition through the use of unicellular organisms from aquatic environments. 

With backing from worldwide venture capitals, NXW’s mission is to protect living waters and the biodiversity within through enabling the present and future generations to grow with functional, complete, and non-extractive nutrition sourced from water.

We spoke with Toby Lane, CEO, NXW, to discover more about what NXW have been up to since featuring at last year’s summit, as well as their predictions for the future of agri-food supply chains in APAC. 

Looking back at 2024: Experiences from Last Year

Why did you take part in the Asia-Pacific Agri-Food Innovation Summit, how did you find it? 
Nutrition from Water (NXW) took part to socialize and showcase our latest Marine Whey product range utilizing natural, non-GMO biotechnology from Aotearoa New Zealand where we commercialize microscopic algae from the Pacific Ocean’s largest strain library of algae in partnership with Cawthron Institute. We loved the event as it included a variety of corporates, investors and fellow start-ups all looking to transform our food and nutrition systems in the region.

The Present: Spotlighting Current Activity

What's new with you? Are there new partnerships, products or funding rounds you would like to shout about? Did meetings at the summit kick start any of these? 
We have just set up a new science team and centre of Marine Whey production in Portugal that allows us to produce up to 100,000 kgs of Marine Whey per annum for early customer partners. We have entered into two joint development agreements including with one of Japan’s leading importers and distributors of protein, Nissei Kyoeki Ltd. The summit helped build our partner and customer pipeline for Marine Whey across the region.

What excites you about the future of agri-food supply chains in APAC? Have you seen a new technology you are particularly excited about, and do you have any predictions for the future?
We are excited about launching and commercializing Marine Whey together with leading dairy and nutrition partners across Asia Pacific. Our Marine Whey technology is suited for companies focused on affordable nutrition and food solutions and want ingredients that are complete in nutrition, natural (non GMO) and suitable for a variety of applications.

What advice do you have for other start-ups?
